I played the Cinema in Culver City last Tuesday, May 13. Not much of a crowd, but Daniel Lanois was at the bar. He had shown up with singer Tawny Ellis and Danielle Hardy from McCabe’s. We talked between sets. I saw his band Black Dub on the festival circuit a couple of years ago, and quite liked it. Last Tuesday I had Steve Mugalian on drums and Gregory Boaz on bass, as usual, and also the brilliant Mike Tempo on percussion. Musically, it was a wonderful night. We were quiet most of the time, dynamic, and grooving like crazy. DL said more than once that he liked the band, and also mentioned that he liked my saxophone playing, saying I had an old-school tone. Not a big crowd that night, but I was happy to have some friends there and to meet Lanois.
